Russian tennis players Margarita Gasparyan and Ekaterina Makarova have become the champions of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2019 in doubles. They defeated the Russian-Slovak duo of Anna Kalinskaya and Viktória Kužmová in the final by 7/5 and 7/5. In both duos’ final rounds, Margarita and Ekaterina dealt decisive break points, ending their meeting without a champions tie-break. For Makarova, this is her 15th WTA doubles title and Gasparyan’s fourth.
“It seems like it went petty well for us, this is our first time playing together and we won the title straight away”, said Gasparyan, sharing her impressions after the victory. “The Olympics is of course an incredible tournament, I’m really happy that Elena [Vesnina] and I managed to win it. The next Olympics is still a long way off, it’s hard to figure. Margarita is very talented, she’s doing well”, said Ekaterina, weighing up the possibility of a new duo in the next Olympics.
