Makarova: playing against Vesnina is mentally challenging for me, I need to play my maximum all the time

Russian Elena Vesnina (5) advanced to the second round of the tournament in Saint Petersburg defeating her compatriot Ekaterina Makarova 6:3, 6:1.

The match lasted 1 hour and 8 minutes. Elena hit 3 aces and won 5 break points out of 14. Ekaterina hit 2 aces, made 2 double faults and broke her opponent’s serve once.

Ekaterina Makarova commented on her performance after losing the first-round match at the tournament in Saint Petersburg to her compatriot Elena Vesnina 3:6, 1:6 and said about her plans to play at the Fed Cup against Taiwan.

“It’s mentally challenging for me to face Lena, we know each other so well. We’ve been playing against each other more often lately. Today, I made a lot of errors whereas Lena played accurately and fault-free. I was to play my maximum but I failed to do so.

We decided to take singles more seriously this time that’s why we are not playing doubles. I plan to participate in the Fed Cup. I always used to get acclimated well but this time I got cold on the second day. This time shift in temperatures was hard for me. Back in Australia, I prepared well and was gaining form with every match. Major tournaments turn out to be much more motivating for me.

Lena and I had prepared well for doubles but Hlavachkova demonstrated some incredible tennis. It was windy and it was tough to play volleys. After our triumph in Rio, everybody wanted to defeat us at the US Open, we had only three-set matches and then everything was back to normal.

As for my further plans, I am going to the Fed Cup now and then – to Dubai”, Makarova is quoted by Daria Tuboltseva, the Championat portal reporter.
